— CINDY'S STORY

The Mess
Behind the

Mic.

Introductions are never simple when the work you do is deeply personal. But understanding my journey will help you understand why everything I do today — every keynote, every coaching conversation, every page of my book — is grounded in one unshakeable belief: you cannot influence others until you can influence yourself.

It Started Early

I was born in Singapore to parents who worked hard and loved deeply. But as a young child, I was passed from hand to hand — and some of those hands left scars.

By 14, I had become the bully — beating up others and getting beaten too. Sharp tongue, louder mouth, but my self-worth could fit in a coin pouch. I didn't understand then that the aggression was armour, and that beneath it was a child who had never learned to feel safe enough to be herself.

Glam Inside. Garbage Inside.

At 19 I joined the airline — polished uniform, practiced smile, perfect performance. And behind all of it were pills, booze, shame, and a voice on repeat: You're never enough, Cindy.

In my mid-twenties, my body broke down. A diagnosis of avascular necrosis — hip degeneration disease — stopped me cold. The doctor was blunt: chronic alcoholism had done this, and I was likely wheelchair-bound for life.

Two titanium hip replacements and a lot of bargaining with God later, I emerged with bionic hips, a dark sense of humour about airport security, and the first honest question I'd asked myself in years:

Is this a comeback or a breakdown?

It wasn't healing yet. But it was the beginning of one.

Power heels. Big deals. Bigger Debts.

I recovered and spent a decade in corporate life — MNCs, power heels, big deals, and bags I couldn't afford because I was shopping to feel worthy. From the outside it looked like success — titles, results, a career that ticked every box. From the inside, I was still chasing validation with every purchase and every promotion, bad decisions compounding into bigger debts until I came close to bankruptcy, deeply ashamed and still convincing myself that the next win would finally make me feel enough.

It never did.

The BS Breakdown

I quit corporate in my mid-thirties and sold makeup to survive. And somewhere in the chaos of watching my entire life become a trigger and a crisis, something shifted — not dramatically, not all at once, but quietly and painfully until I arrived at a truth I could no longer avoid:

It wasn't life. It was me.

I was drowning in BS I had never faced — patterns running since childhood, stories I told myself to stay small and stay safe. A mentor led me to a programme that confronted everything I'd been avoiding, where a coach looked at how I showed up — passive, disengaged, indifferent — and said something that changed the trajectory of my life:

How do you do anything is how you do everything."

That sentence exposed what I could no longer ignore. My behaviour in that room was the same behaviour shaping my health, my finances, my relationships, and my leadership. For the first time, I stopped blaming circumstances and started taking responsibility — and while that moment didn't fix my life, it gave me back my agency.

The Reckoning

In my forties, I turned the mess into a message, building a speaking career around EQ and influence — real talk for leaders who are done performing and ready to lead from the inside out. I still battle my own demons, but I'm finally free to own them, laugh at them, and use them as the raw material they were always meant to be.

I still battle my own demons. But I'm finally free to own them, laugh at them, and use them as the raw material they were always meant to be.

My favourite biblical wisdom captures what I lived:

"Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope."

ROMANS 5:3

Every chapter stripped something away. And every chapter built something stronger in its place.

Now. Flawed But Feeling Liberated.

Today I'm a professional speaker of 13 years, happily married, and blessed with two furkids who demand nothing but treats and belly rubs. I come from a loving Christian family — my parents have always been my bedrock, loving and supportive through every chapter, including the ones I'm not proud of. I do not take that for granted for a single day.

Through mentors, leaders, and friends who believed in me before I believed in myself, and through grace I certainly didn't earn, I found my way to alignment between who I was and how I lived.

I don't consider myself a survivor. I consider myself deeply blessed — not despite everything that happened, but because of it.

If you're still hiding behind "perfect" — welcome to the party.
